After a three year closure to undergo a $55-million renovation—designed by Minneapolis-based architects and interior designers MSR Design—the spectacular Tulsa Central Library will be celebrating its grand reopening on Saturday, October 1st, 2016.

The project involves the renovation and expansion of the library system’s flagship, originally built in 1965. Highlights of the renovation include:

      • Registered for LEED Gold certification, the building is designed to educate the public about the best building practices and sustainability. Existing building reuse, parking for fuel-efficient cars, stormwater collection, pervious concrete pavers, chilled beams, and cantilevered lighting are some of the areas where the Central Library will gain LEED points.
      • A children’s garden will focus programming for children and families designed to motivate and inspire.
      • The children’s area is designed to appeal to a child’s imagination while developing literacy skills. Play and learn centers will help children increase literacy development.
      • A learning and creativity center is designed to generate excitement and spark creativity for nonprofit organizations using the space for strategic planning, staff learning, and development activities.
      • In the digital literacy lab, people of all ages will participate in challenges that engage them through STEM-based projects and problem-solving activities. Programs and workshops will focus on digital learning and videography, computer programming and coding, robotics, and game design for all ages.
      • The library includes an extensive public art collection integrated into the design, including works by esteemed artists such as Jun Kaneko and Holly Wilson.
