Washburn Lofts, 4th Floor

    • designed specifically for this riverfront loft, a custom wool rug picks up on a found graffiti wall in the living area
    • Overview

While lofts in historic Minneapolis mill buildings are particularly desirable for their unique industrial character, much of this loft space’s authenticity had been hidden beneath a poorly conceived renovation. As part of a new renovation, simple, modern additions now complement the old mill’s re-exposed concrete shell and a graffiti-covered brick wall.

MSR was charged with removing all traces of the previous renovation and creating a home that would be true to its setting and better-suited to the clients’ tastes and lifestyle. The open living and dining area and adjacent kitchen provide space for entertaining and offer stunning views of the riverfront. Moving panels and custom millwork throughout hide a variety of storage options.

    • the Valcucine kitchen can be closed to conceal cooking tools, creating an extension of the living space for entertaining
    • a line of shelves along the corridor—for display of the clients’ existing art collection—provides a datum that draws the eye to the living area and the view beyond
    • laser-cut wood panels in the entry corridor conceal water pipes that service the building and provide a textural counterpart to the mill's rough concrete columns
    • an enclosed box in the center of the loft houses more quiet functions, including a study (which doubles as a guest room with a Murphy bed concealed in the millwork)
    • high-quality, neutral material choices provide consistency throughout the space, such as the white walls contrasted by dark-stained oak millwork
