    • Overview

“For a decade now, hipster clothing retailer Urban Outfitters and Minneapolis architecture firm MSR have collaborated on a series of stunning adaptive reuses at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. . . . The ongoing project has brought out the best in both sides.”—John Reinan, Architecture Minnesota

Building 18 served as a shipbuilding facility in the Philadelphia Navy Yard more than 90 years. The structure now houses design studios and office space for Urban Outfitters’ Anthropologie brand as part of the MSR-designed, award-winning, multi-phased corporate headquarters for the company. The design concept engages the building’s factory characteristics—industrial materiality, open volumes, and access to daylight—as it transforms the building from a manufacturing facility into a center for creativity. The project challenged MSR to program a successful workspace layout on a single floor that equals more than two football fields in length. To accomplish this goal, the designers located Anthropologie’s main departments—designing, finishing, and merchandising—in separate wings in a linear fashion that represents the company’s order of operations, from product concept to marketplace. Custom millwork and workstations have an aesthetic consistency, with a modular flexibility to handle variations in department uses.
