    • Overview

This multi-phased design and construction project provides new office space for a major philanthropist organization within the National Historic Landmark Washburn A Mill ruin overlooking the Mississippi River.

To translate McKnight’s mission of improving the quality of life for future generations into physical space, MSR developed a discovery workbook, using staff responses to determine programming and aesthetic preferences. A large outdoor terrace, and multi-purpose conference room, and offices offer connections to the riverfront. Daylighting, ventilation, and acoustics are carefully considered throughout the space. In keeping with McKnight’s support of the arts, the lobby serves as a flexible gallery space for changing exhibitions.

    • lobbies and flexible conference rooms provide large open spaces for hosting special events
    • design details reflect McKnight’s goals; this stair represents their goal to restore the water quality and resilience of the Mississippi
    • private offices include plenty of group meeting space, for internal collaboration and working with grant applicants
