Crane Island Cabin

    Previous Next
    • located on an island in Lake Minnetonka, this new summer home respects the character of the neighboring historic cottages
    • Overview

Crane Island’s community of summer cottages—owned by the same families for generations—comprise a National Historic District. Located on the site of a demolished cottage, the design of this new summer home presented the challenges of delicately fitting it into the historic context and respecting the Midwestern architectural character cherished by residents.

Designed to celebrate casual summer living, the house accommodates frequent guests, as well as spaces for retreat. The ensemble of structures on the site (including the main house, guest house, and existing water tower) provides an ideal relaxed environment for the activities of the family and their guests.

    • dating from the early 1900s, fourteen summer cottages surround a central green and ring historic Crane Island in Lake Minnetonka
    • the design breaks down the scale of the house by creating two linked gabled structures to better match the scale of the other island homes
    • each gabled part has slightly different detailing to convey the sense of accretion over time
    • the main gabled structure houses the kitchen, living, and dining areas, the other a den that leads to bedrooms on the second floor
    • custom millwork and cabinetry throughout offers plenty of storage for the family and their guests
    • interior gatherings center around the large stone fireplace
    • located off the main living area, the wrap-around screen porch provides a transition between inside and out and spectacular views of the lake
