Ames Public Library

    • as part of the Ames Public Library renewal, an addition forms a new entry between the original Carnegie building and previous expansions
    • Overview

This community library renewal blends and contrasts the aesthetics of the original building and all of its expansions with a contemporary addition that meets the needs of 21st-century library users.

The project involved a feasibility study to determine whether to renovate and expand the existing facility or build a new one, site selection, a public input process, pre-referendum support once the decision was made to renovate and expand the existing library (including a historic 1904 Carnegie building), and full design and construction of the renovation and expansion. Now 60% larger, the renewed library offers more civic engagement space, including meeting rooms and informal gathering areas. A dedicated children’s area on the ground floor features a theater, story time room, interactive electronic display board, and a selection of cushions and small stools. The library also offers a new tweens’ space, a specialized teens’ area that accommodates heavy use of technology, and a wide mix of seating options throughout the building. High ceilings and expansive windows fill the building with natural light. Offering far more than books, the library has become a destination for the community with room to grow.
