IIDA Northland hosted its 9th annual charity fashion show on Friday, October 3rd

MSR was the only firm to take home two awards on Friday evening, including “Best Interpretation of Musical Venue” and the “People’s Choice Award.” Congratulations to our team, led by designers Caitlin Maus and Veronica McCracken, and including model Mary Brandt.

This year, Fusion entrants were asked to create couture ensembles inspired by music venues from around the world. The use of materials and finishes from the building design industry was strongly encouraged.

MSR’s design was inspired by the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center in Azerbaijan, designed by architect Zaha Hadid. Hadid has an unforgettable personal presence, which is echoed in her masterpieces. The elegant and futuristic Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center is no exception. Both figuratively and literally, the building embraces users with its layered waves of material. The draped forms of the building, which hint at local fashion, are seemingly weightless despite the solid construction. MSR’s garment reflects the innovative design of the Center and pays homage to its architect. The garment is constructed of Svelte, a Bolyu felt wall covering made from 100% post-consumer recycled water bottles, and 3M dichroic window film. The soft, yet sturdy, felt material mimics the cascading form of the building, while the dynamic reflective film represents the extensive use of glass in the façade.

Thirty percent of proceeds from the event go to the Northland Chapter Education Fund, whose primary mission is to advance interior design through research and education. You can learn more about the event and the fund at the IIDA Northland website.
